Phenotyping and Genetic Pathology

Discovery of gene-variant mice with a phenotype of interest depends on a reliable, cost and resource efficient screen. The APF has a team of dedicated, well trained and observant animal care staff along with expert scientists and access to state-of-the-art facilities for developing and implementing screens of mammalian body systems and analysing the effect of specific gene alterations.

The APF access to key technologies for phenotyping in the form of

  • 12 parameter flow cytometry
  • Clinical biochemistry Olympus AU400 autoanalyser
  • Affymetrix and spotted microarray gene expression profiling
  • ABI 4800 MALDI-TOF TOF plus 2D LC and Accuspot
  • ABI 7900 real time PCR
  • Musterer database for recording of results and tracking strains

The APF’s Facility Veterinarian provides gross pathology, clinical pathology and histopathology services to further phenotype strains of interest.

The APF has access to a network of specialists at each of the proponent institutions providing specialised expertise in phenotyping allowing evaluation of changes in key body systems.
